Cultural heritage serves as a foundational pillar in the advancement of sustainable tourism, particularly in regions with rich historical and architectural legacies. This study investigates the role of cultural heritage in fostering sustainable tourism practices in the Samarkand region of Uzbekistan, a UNESCO-recognized site known for its Silk Road landmarks. Through this research, we aim to understand how cultural resources contribute not only to tourism growth but also to community development and long-term environmental stewardship. A qualitative case study approach was utilized, combining ethnographic fieldwork, stakeholder interviews, and analysis of local tourism policies. Interviews were conducted with heritage site managers, cultural experts, tour operators, and municipal officials to uncover the link between heritage preservation and sustainable tourism outcomes. Archival research and onsite observations provided additional context. The results reveal that cultural heritage in Samarkand is more than a tourist attraction—it is a dynamic asset that shapes local identity, promotes intercultural dialogue, and anchors community-led tourism models. However, findings also highlight key limitations, such as insufficient investment in conservation, over-tourism in peak seasons, and the underrepresentation of intangible cultural heritage in tourism narratives. This research contributes to the broader discourse by emphasizing the integrative role of cultural heritage in tourism sustainability frameworks. It proposes a heritage-centered model where preservation, education, and responsible visitation align with regional economic goals. The study’s implications extend to policymakers, heritage institutions, and local entrepreneurs seeking to position culture as both a driver and guardian of sustainable tourism.
