Abstract

This article examines the development of trade services in the Samarkand region within the broader context of Uzbekistan’s evolving service economy. Recognised for its strategic location and historical significance, Samarkand has experienced steady growth in its service sector, contributing 6.0% to the national volume and achieving a growth rate of 112.7% in the first eight months of 2024. Despite this upward trajectory, there exists a knowledge gap in understanding how regional trade services, especially small and medium enterprises (SMES), adapt to digitalisation, access financial resources, and integrate into broader economic frameworks. The study employs a descriptive-analytical method based on official statistics from the State Statistics Agency, focusing on service volumes, growth rates, and sectoral composition. Key findings indicate that trade services in Samarkand reached 4,888.3 billion UZS, with retail activities constituting the majority. However, the dominance of traditional service formats and limited digital integration continues to constrain efficiency and scalability. The research implies that enhancing digital infrastructure, streamlining policy implementation, and supporting entrepreneurship can significantly boost the performance of trade services. The results underscore the importance of a localised, data-driven development strategy to bridge gaps in regional economic competitiveness. Future research should explore micro-level dynamics, such as consumer behaviour and enterprise innovation practices, to inform sustainable trade service development in Samarkand and similar regions.
