Abstract

Literature has long served as a vital tool for reflecting and shaping cultural identity, acting as a mirror of societal values and a platform for intellectual discourse. In the context of the 21st century, global challenges such as political polarization, technological advancement, and cultural hybridization have further intensified the need to explore literature’s transformative role. Russian and American literary traditions offer rich terrain for comparative study, revealing how authors respond to their respective socio-political environments while engaging with universal themes of identity, memory, and morality. Despite growing interest in global literature, there remains limited comparative scholarship focused specifically on 21st-century Russian and American narratives and their socio-cultural implications. This research aims to examine the interplay between literature and cultural identity in Russian and American contexts, exploring how authors reflect, resist, or reimagine historical narratives and contemporary challenges. Through textual analysis and interdisciplinary inquiry, the study uncovers how figures like Vladimir Sorokin and Jhumpa Lahiri embody distinctive yet overlapping literary responses, often critiquing dominant ideologies and advocating for marginalized perspectives. These findings highlight the role of literature in fostering empathy, promoting social critique, and bridging cultural divides. The study offers a cross-cultural literary framework that integrates narrative analysis with sociological and philosophical insights, addressing the evolving dynamics of global literary discourse. The research underscores the importance of literature in shaping both individual and collective consciousness, suggesting that continued comparative studies can deepen our understanding of narrative as a force for cultural negotiation, resistance, and transformation.
