The communities residing along the Indonesia–Timor Leste border initiate dryland farming through the Fek Nono Hau Ana (FNHA) ritual, which serves as a traditional request for ancestral permission to open new land. Central to this ritual is the sacrificial slaughter of chickens, offered to the ancestors. The tobe (ritual leader) interprets the messages of the ancestors by examining the large and small intestines of the sacrificial chickens. This study aims to analyze and interpret the ideological underpinnings and cultural semiotics embedded in the FNHA ritual as practiced by these border communities within the context of their dryland farming systems. A descriptive qualitative method was employed. Findings reveal that chickens are essential ritual components: their blood is dripped onto a sacred altar, and their intestines are used for divination. The ideology underlying the FNHA ritual reflects the Jak community’s belief that no land is unclaimed—every area is considered to be inhabited by ancestral spirits. Chickens are regarded as powerful intermediaries capable of rapidly transmitting communication. The wing feathers symbolize the power of flight and serve as metaphors for spiritual communication with God, ancestors, and nature. The blood of the chicken represents a living offering, signifying both the community's earnest plea for permission to cultivate the land and the enduring blood bond between the living and the ancestral realm. Divinatory focus is placed on the large intestine, branches of the small intestine, and the membrane connecting the intestines. An abundant harvest is predicted when 'lamp' nails (a symbolic term for specific intestinal signs) appear within the chicken’s intestines, along with the open configuration of the connecting membrane, indicating ancestral approval.
